More Finds

I forgot to post about these. This was a slow day at the thrift store a few weeks ago. First up is a Bradley doll ($1.00) If you haven't seen how cute these dolls are please click here. You just might find yourself in love!

Also, found a little crib for Blueberry Muffin! So what if it's not vintage!

Hoping to hit a store or two next week. Currently I am forbidden to drive because it might injure my stomach muscles post surgery. Blech! I hate restrictions!

The Hedonic Tredmill and My Little White Shelf

I have been in bed for the past five days recovering from a minor abdominal surgery. During this time I have had the pleasure of finishing several books on social sciences and psycology. I am always interested in how the human brain works and how it relates to life's troubles (sugery) and joys (toys!) and I always want to maximize my experiences of pleasure while minimizing the things I find lame.

I started collecting very early and even though I loved getting a new toy and shopping for toys I began to notice a problem. When I had all my toys together in one big room stacked to the ceiling I felt rather gross, kind of like the old ladies on Hoarders. I suddenly couldn't focus, didn't appreciate that hard to find item or that completed set. Everything looked like a rainbow of sameness and I got sick of my room-o-toys and put everything in storage for awhile.

That feeling didn't mean I was suddenly done collecting or that I lost interest in toys. On the contrary, I was always looking for more and trying to complete sets and collections. I struggled for years on what I should focus on and how much time and money I should spend on the hobby, and now that I am a bit older I think I have come up with the perfect "toy enjoyment" equation.

The hedonic treadmill is a principal of the human condition that states no matter what joys and sorrows we add to our lives we will eventually bob back to the same depth of happiness or misery we enjoyed before the joy or sorrow was added to the mix. In other words, a new rare UK My Little Pony in the mail might give me a day, a week, a month of happiness, but eventually I will require another rare beauty to come along in order to maintain that happiness. That burst of joy will fade and that pretty pony will become another hunk of plastic in my collection.

The book "The Upside to Irrationality" gave an answer to how we can maintain that new burst of joy for as long as possible. In several studies involving a vacuum cleaner and a DVR (I wont bother repeating them here because I am lazy) behavioral psychologists came to the conclusion that in order to make happy things last longer you must interrupt them. On the flip side, in order to make unpleasant things go as quickly as possible, you must take care of it all at once, without interruption.

How does this apply to toy collecting?

When we moved into our new house, long before I learned about the hedonic treadmill, I decided that I would continue toy collecting under the following conditions:

1) The item had to be cheap or a very very good deal. In order to find those deals I have to wait and wait and wait. (Interruption) I don't get to have everything I want now, I have to wait until it is half the usual cost or dirt cheap at a thrift store.
2) I only have one shelf in which to display my toys. This satisfies the principles of interruption by "hiding" the items I have and only trotting them out on display maybe only a few weeks out of the year. With this tecnique I never get the color-overwhelm or feel "grossed out" by my hoarding. I also do not take the toys for granted.

So, even though I love seeing the big toy rooms online I enjoy a small display here at home. Today I felt good enough to get out Lady Lovely Locks and put her on the little white shelf.

FINDS for October 6, 2010

So I wrote yesterday that I am too poor to go out thrifting, but my fortunes changed a bit and I was able to go out and find a few fun things!

First, let me share with you this funky girl! I have no idea if it is home made or not but it was too fun to pass up at $2! Lol.

Then I found myself three other goodies!
Got these items from Canada. In it are a few pieces to go with that stable I found for $2. Still need several more accessories but on my way!

The Toys Hanging Around My House Today

As a collector, I believe it is important to focus on what you have, rather than what you are missing. I haven't been able to head to the thrift stores (I'm poor) so I have been loving the stuff I already have! Here are a few random friends hanging out with me this week.

Here's my wee Baby Buddies set! I had all these when I was a kid so I was happy to reacquire one set on eBay. Looking forward to more!

This is my Mod Bradley beauty. Not sure what attracts me to these dolls, but I love them. Mostly you see Victorian Era Bradley's. This cute Mod style is rare. Lucky me! She cost a $1.50 last month at a thrift store.

My Mod in her cute fur coat!

My Little Pony baby Shaggy! I just located her in my overflowing toy bins. She has her bottle, I am still looking for her comb. She is hanging out in my fabric basket!

Nastina is tempting Iris to buy more toys even though she's broke!

Luckily, Sunny Sunflower has vanquished this foe!

I just restyled cute Baby Firefly's wayward hair. Now she's my sewing buddy!

Remember my knee-hugger clowns from the 60's? They are sitting on my toy shelf for the time being, scaring my kids and husband out of the room.

Like all crazy doll people, I have named them. The one above is "Jilly Bean."

My husband thinks they are weird. He doesn't see them for the pixies they are!

That's my photo tour for this week! I am having surgery Friday so I may not post next week, or I may post a lot. Who knows? I know I wont be thrifting any time soon!

Blinkins!

Blinkins hold a special place in my heart. When I was seven years old my mother decided to divorce my step father and because she felt so guilty for the impact of a second divorce she and my grandmother went out and bought my sister and I a huge bunch of toys. They put them in plastic bags and had us dump them out. It was like Christmas in July!

In the bag we found Hot Looks dolls, Lady Lovely Locks, Moondreamers and Blinkins! Above is a picture of the event (I am the one standing up).

Even though it was not an easy time in my mother's life I hardly noticed because I had so many super cool toys to play with (it's not a mystery why I am such a collector, lol).

Over the past year or so I have seen Blinkins prices go all over the place. Most sellers want $50-$80 for a MIP set, but the truth is, these aren't that desired by collectors and were not terribly popular at the time. Auctions of the dolls go about $10 a set. I bought the above items for $5 on eBay with $10 shipping. A good deal, I think. I am glad to have my Blinkins friends back! You can see more Blinkins pictures here.

WHOA!! Look what I scored today! Bought the whole set from a local newspaper ad for $70, which I think is an excellent deal.

Came with many many ponyville friends and some bigger ponies!
